"Starsky
and Hutch" Recs
Izzie's
Recs
S&H
was my first introduction to fanfiction - until I discovered it a few
years ago, I had no idea such a thing existed outside my head.
So, I went
into total immersion, & was less than selective about what I read.
Now, it's good to extract the gems and list them here. The
list will grow as I have more time.
Beware of
spoilers ahead.
| Equilibrium |
molo |
slash |
It
was almost impossible to choose just one of molo's stories - there
are so many, and they are unfailingly good. Terrific writing, strong
characterisations and hot, hot sex. This is post-SR, and has all the
above! |
| Drought |
PFL |
slash |
Very
short, but incredibly effective tale of Hutch's reaction to Starsky's
first day back at work after Gunther's hit. |
| Unforgiveable |
K Hanna
Korossy |
gen |
K Hanna
Korossy's many S&H stories tend to leave you with a warm feeling
and a h/c itch nicely scratched, so this one jolted me a lot when
I read it first, and I still think it's one of her best. |
| Tandem |
Paula
Wilshe & Hutchrules3 |
slash |
A long,
gentle story, set after The Plague, with Starsky and Hutch
holidaying in a snowy Minnesota. |
| Learning
to Breathe |
Veronica |
slash |
A beautifully
written, well-paced story which starts with Starsky returning to find
the man he thought he knew walking away from the city he protected,
the job he loved—and their partnership. |
Remnants
|
Rosemary
|
slash |
This
one had me on the edge of my seat when I first read it. Although it
deals with a difficult subject, Rosemary writes so well that you are
drawn into the reality. I also really like the way she handles the
aftermath of the traumatic event at the heart of the story. |
Decision
|
Kaye
Austen Michaels |
slash |
Another
post-SR, dealing with Hutch's struggle to come to terms with his partner's
probable return to the streets. This is powerful writing, with Hutch's
inner turmoil brought to life very clearly, without in any way diminishing
him. Kaye has a light touch, balancing angst with some light moments
and vivid images. I really hope she will write the sequel promised
at the end. |
A
Fine Storm |
Suzan
Lovett |
slash |
I love
stories based on misunderstanding and the tensions that can arise,
and this is a classic, with a particularly moving final scene. |
Compassion's
Heart (takes
you to the prologue, then follow the links) |
Charlotte
Frost |
slash |
It
was hard do choose a single Charlotte Frost story too, but this one
presses all my buttons - believable characters, lots of h/c, confused
feelings, and a strong plot too. |
Promises,
Promises |
Lucy |
slash |
Short,
but so good. What more can I say? |
Rebuilding
the Future From the Past

This
is such a positive view of their life together many years after "Sweet
Revenge". It's beautifully understated, and for me rings very
true. |
Restoration

K Hanna
Korossy |

Again,
I could pick almost any story by this writer. Her style is distinctive,
and her depictions of the characters very convincing. I especially
enjoy this one for the one it picks up from the end of an episode
("Snowstorm") and runs with it. |

Shadows and Ghosts

Jetwriter |

Long,
tightly plotted story, which I find very impressive in the way it
weaves in events in the series from earlier as well as foreshadowing
what we know is to come (not Gunther). The characters are well-drawn,
with convincing new ones as well as the familiar ones. The writing
is very atmospheric. It has haunted me since I first read it. |
Conflicting
Loyalties

Marlene
S |
gen |
This
is a tantalising look at how Starsky is still affected by his father's
death, and what he may be persuaded to do as a result. This was originally
designed to be the first in a series, and I am really hoping that
Marlene will have time and inclination to take this further, because
I want to know what happens! |
